Great River Machine Works has the ability to create prototypes quickly. We use two methods: additive and subtractive prototyping. Either, or both, methods are suitable for rapid prototyping, depending on the desired outcome. Please contact us to discuss your designs.
Additive rapid prototyping (or 3D printing) is a process in which layers of ABS plastic are built up, using a laser sintering process. The computer controls the print head, creating a live model from CAD data. Functional models can often be created in a matter of hours.
Machining processes take a raw block of material, and cut away material to create the desired form. This process can often be as fast as 3D printing, depending on the complexity of the part. An advantage of CNC machining is that it can produce features not possible in 3D printing, such as threads. Often, rapid prototyping will involve a combination of the two processes: a 3D printed form will be finish machined in a CNC to make a final product
